- Henry C. Juhl was christened as "Hans" in Haderslev Amt. Denmark in April of 1860. After he immigrated to the United States, he Anglocized his name to Henry. He went with his father, Jens C. Juhl, to Elmer Township, Sanilac County, Michigan in 1882 to help with preparing a home and farm for the rest of the family. Hans and Jens lived in a temporary shanty while this building was done. The community became known as Juhl. On the 1900 census, Henry puts Germany as his country of origin, but that is because the area he was born in Denmark had been annexed by Germany at that time.
He married Elizabeth Alice Stevenson on 15 Jan. 1901 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.
You can find Henry on the ship's log for the 1882 voyage of the "Lord Gough" from Liverpool, England to Philadelphia. He is 22 and says he is from Germany. He has two other brothers with him on that voyage, but they were trying to escape being inscripted into the German army, so they did not board the ship next to each other. Brother Peter is 20 and says he is from Denmark, while brother Anton is 18 and says he is from Russia. (Find a Grave)
