He served in World War II, was a hero and flew 4 years as a Navy Hell Cat fighter pilot, completing numerous missions off aircraft carriers the "Enterprise" and "Hancock" in the Pacific. He earn several medals and the grade of Lt. J.G. He returned home unharmed. He reenlisted in the Navy Air Reserve out of Wold Chamberlain Field (now Minneapolis Int'l Airport) as a test pilot and was called up on June 30, 1947. On July 2, 1947, he was flying an aircraft over his home town of Albert Lea. He crashed and died on South Broadway. in Albert Lea. Witnesses said a wing was off the plane before he landed. He was a spark of light, a much loved son and brother, and he is missed."
